If they keep the pick, I bet they draft a defenceman. Defencemen usually take a little longer to break in, so they tend to drop a bit in the first round. There's basically no chance whoever they pick is going to play this year, and the defence might be suddenly extremely thin after this year. If Brodie, Hamonic, and Stone could all be gone and who knows when Gio decides to get old.

The Flames don't have a single defensive prospect in the system that even remotely looks like an NHL defenseman if Andersson, Kylington, and Valimaki have graduated from prospect status.

Take the best player available, but if it's between a forward and a defenceman, the defenceman is the right choice this year.

The Farm might be thin, but not the big club.

It's not thin today, but they're drafting for three years from now.

Keep drinking Squill

Marner will want 10+ mil compared to Johnny’s 6.75 and Aho is Carolina’s best forward and will not get traded.

Butt nice try

So Valimaki, Hanifin, Andersson, Fatenburg, Kylington, Giordano and Hamonic is what you consider extremely thin if we were to trade Brodie and Stone away? Seems like a stretch to say that don’t you think? Plus it would open up 8.4 mil in cap space or so.

Hes excluding them from the conversation as they have graduated to the big leagues and are no longer prospects. Outside of them we don't have much.

Watching the draft, you can see as the picks go by that Tre is keeping the pick. So far a pretty boring draft. Think it has to do with the league playing games with the cap. Even though the GM's have a relatively good idea what it will be, this reeks of the league playing games and it is causing issues with the teams making ANY kind of deals.

Sure Jacob is a decent player.

Maybe they will change the name of the team to the Smurfs.

Again, it's not this year, it's three years from now. There's a decent chance Hamonic and Kylington are gone by then, Fantenberg isn't signed, and Giordano is 35. Right now, there's no one in the system to take a spot in a few years, and with zero chance of a high draft pick next year, they're not getting anyone that won't take a few years to make the NHL.
